Jeff Heinatz has worked for the Texas Department of State Health Services for almost 25 years and 23 of those years have been spent being headquartered in Alpine. Jeff transferred to Alpine in 1987 with his wife Dru. It wasn't long before she became employed at Alpine ISD as a teacher and her employment secured that they could begin to build their new lives here in the Big Bend area. Jeff has been interested in wildlife since he was a boy going out hiking, hunting, fishing, and calling predators with his Dad and his older brother on their family property in the Texas Hill Country. Predator calling was always the most fascinating part of hunting that Jeff had experienced and the love of wildlife and just being outside has carried on into adulthood. The difference between then and now is that Jeff only hunts with a camera now. Jeff has to devote most of his time to his career and much of that time is spent on the road covering a Public Health Region that is comprised of 36 Counties but he has still managed to have some of his work purchased by the Texas State Park System, Texas State Agencies, and the National Park System, and he has had his work published in several Texas magazines, other publications, and newspapers. Some of his work can be seen on display at some of our West Texas State and National Parks. Jeff has taken several journalist with him on wildlife shoots for news stories and was even invited to appear on CBS News with Dan Rather for a story, (but didn't actually get to meet Dan Rather). As Jeff nears retirement with the State of Texas, he is making plans to add to his collection of photographs, to become more active in the marketing of his photographs, and to use his photographs for several books that he wants to publish so that others can enjoy his photographs, learn to call wildlife, or just learn how to view and enjoy wildlife for themselves. Jeff and Dru have raised two children together here in Alpine. Jarrod is currently a Junior at Angelo State University and Jesseca is an upcoming Senior at Alpine ISD.

A collection of his photographs was the first traveling exhibit for the American Quarter Horse Heritage Center and Museum. Entitled "Hoofbeats on the Pitchfork Ranch," the collection has traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. His photographs have appeared in many national publications including The Cattleman, Western Horseman, Quarter Horse Journal, American Cowboy and Range Magazine. Born in Knox City, Texas, to the ranching family of J.C. (Togo) and Lucille Moorhouse, Bob and his wife, Linda, have two daughters, Amy and Keri Ann. He earned a B.S. degree in Animal Science-Business from Texas Tech University. As a director of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, Bob serves on the Labor Committee. J. Griffis Smith, Photo Editor for Texas Highways Magazine. "Griff" is a graduate of the Art Institute of Atlanta, and worked at Texas A&M University before becoming one of TxDOT's most dedicated photographers. After 26 years photographing for Texas Highways, his work has graced countless pages of magazines, brochures and even wall murals. A master of light, Griff turns the ordinary into images of extraordinary beauty. He has logged more than 200,000 miles traveling Texas highways. Griff's dedication to his craft was demonstrated in 1986 while shooting at La Kiva Restaurant in Terlingua. A shot he wanted required climbing on the roof, and in the process he did not "break-a-leg," but did break an arm. Griff drove himself to Alpine to get the arm splintered, only to return to Terlingua and complete two more days of shooting, before returning to Austin to receive proper medical care. Griff has conducted workshops in the SW Arts & Crafts Center in San Antonio and taught a travel photography class with the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. http://www.texashighways.com
